Sodersten Claims WSC Men's Singles Title

VC's Brodie Sodersten became the latest Pirate men's tennis player to win the Western State Conference singles championship on Friday. Additionally, he and doubles partner Sam Ashbrook won their semifinal match before falling the doubles title match later to complete the day.

the No. 2-seeded Sodersten defeated teammate Santino Serralonga 6-2, 6-2 in the singles championship match Friday morning. Sodersten, a second-year freshman from Clovis, CA, becomes the 18th player in VC men's tennis history to claim the title and the first since Priyank Soni won it in 2018.

Later in the day, The top-seeded Sodersten and Ashbrook won their semifinal in doubles over VC teammates Philemon Jabin and Jinsei Tajima 6-4, 6-4 while Yuya Koide and Ryan Lam fell in their semifinal match to the No. 2 seeds from Glendale.

In the doubles final, Sodersten and Ashbrook fell to Glendale 7-5, 6-3 to take the runner-up spot.

Finally, in the back draw, Regnar Madarang and Serralonga won a pair of matches.

Through the WSC Singles and Doubles Championship Tournament, the Pirates have qualified a full contiongent for the Southern California Regionals to be held April 29 and 30. Ventrua will be represented in singles by Jabin, Sodersten, Koide, Ashbrook, Tajima and Serralonga.  In doubles play, Sodersten and Ashbrook, Koide and Lam, and Tajima and Jabin will all enter the draw.

The Pirates return to team competition on Tuesday April 12 with a SoCal semifinal match. No. 2-seeded VC hosts No. 4 San Diego City College at 2:00 pm at the VC Tennis Center.
