VC Dominates First Day of WSC Singles & Doubles Tourney

The Ventura College men's tennis team dominated the first day of the Western State Conference singles and doubles championships Friday at the VC Tennis Center. The Pirates were 13-0 in singles play, advancing to seven of the eight remaining spots in the draw. Meanwhile, VC was 3-0 in doubles play with a bye as they occupied half of the remaining duos in doubles play.

VC's top seed, No. 2 Philemon Jabin had a bye in the round of 32 before producing a love, love win in the round of 16 against an opponent from Santa Barbara. 

No. 4 Brodie Sodersten also took care of business with a one and love win over an opponent from Glendale before prevailing one and love again over a player from Bakersfield to move to the round of eight.

No. 7 Yuya Koide blanked his first round opponent from Bakersfield, 6-0, 6-0, and triumphed 6-0, 6-1 over a competitor from Santa Barbara in the round of 16.

Unseeded Jinsei Tajima was a love, love winner against Glendale in the round of 32 before upsetting the No. 5-seeded player from Glendale 6-0, 6-0 to move on. 

Sam Ashbrook advanced in the first match of the day 6-0, 6-1 against Glendale before defeating the No. 6-seed in the draw from Santa Barbara, 6-4, 6-0.

Meanwhile, Santino Serralonga won against Santa Barbara 6-1, 6-2 before defeating the No. 8 seed from Glendale 6-3, 6-3.

Finally, Ryan Lam defeated an opponent from Glendale 6-0, 6-1 before upsetting the No. 3-seed from Bakersfield, 6-4, 6-1.

In doubles play, VC's top-seeded team of Ashbrook and Sodersten received a bye to Saturday's quarterfinals while No. 3 Koide and Lam recorded an 8-1 victory over a team from Santa Barbara. No. 6 Jabin and Tajima prevailed 8-0 over Bakersfield while unseeded Regnar Madarang and Serralonga triumphed 8-1 over the No. 7 seed in the draw.

Play in the tournament will resume on Saturday April 2. Singles quarterfinals will begin at 11:30 am featuring Koide against the No. 1-seed from Glendale, Tajima versus No. 4 Sodersten, Lam against Ashbrook and Serralonga taking on No. 2 Jabin.

Doubles quarterfinals will be played at 4:00 pm featuring a Pirate duo in each of the four matches.
