Pirates Advance to Ojai in WSC Championships

VC's Antonio Rosales led a host of Pirates whose play in the Western State Conference Championships on Friday and Saturday has qualified them for the CCCAA State Championships held at The Ojai Tournament later this month. Rosales had two wins on Friday and two more on Saturday to advance to the WSC singles championship to be played Friday April 12 at the VC Tennis Center. In doubles, Rosales and partner Kyle Spiegelman, and the duo of Thiago Batista and Alexandre Campolina moved to the WSC semifinals, also to be played April 12.

Rosales breezed through his Round of 32 match on Friday, defeating his opponent from Santa Barbara, 6-0, 6-0, then defeating an opponent from Glendale in the Round of 16, 6-1, 6-0. On Saturday he won his quarterfinal match against an player from Glendale 6-1, 4-1, ret. before advancing to the final with a love-love win over another Glendale Vaquero opponent.

Charles De La Laurencie also qualified for state with a strong WSC semifinal appearance. He won two matches Friday without dropping a game, a love-love win over an opponent from Bakersfield before moving to the quarterfinals against a Glendale Vaquero 5-0, ret. Saturday he moved to the semifinals, 6-2, 6-1 against another Glendale opponent before falling to the draw's top seed, also from Glendale, 6-4, 6-2 in the semifinals.

Spiegelman also qualified for The Ojai with a default win on Friday followed by a 7-5, 6-4 win over his opponent from Bakersfield in the Round of 32. He lost the quarterfinals to the top-seed from Glendale.

Campolina made state through the back draw Saturday. He won his Round of 32 match against a Bakersfield Renegade, 6-0, 6-0 before falling in the Round of 16 to an opponent from Glendale. Saturday, he defeated an opponent from Bakersfield, 7-5, 6-1, to advance to The Ojai.

Batista had his singles season come to an end Friday with a first round loss to an opponent from Santa Barbara.

In doubles, top-seeded Rosales and Spiegelman cruised to the semifinals on Saturday with an 8-2 win over a team from Bakersfield. Meanwhile, Batista and Campolina won on Friday 8-0 over a duo from Bakersfield before moving to the semifinals by default over a pair from Santa Barbara. The doubles pair of Jacob Boucher and Eric Rodriguez also qualified for The Ojai for the Pirates.

The WSC men's singles championship, and the men's doubles semifinals and finals will take place Friday April 12 at the VC Tennis Center.
