The 2017 Ventura College men's tennis season came to an end Friday when the doubles team of Bill Whitaker and Cruz Thayne fell in the Round of 16 at the CCCAA State Championships at The Ojai Tournamentt. Whitaker also bowed out of the tournament in the Sweet 16 of singles competition earlier in the day. Meanwhile the doubles pair of Augustin Lestelle and Damon Mitchell fell Friday in the Round of 32. Lestelle fell in singles play in the Round of 32, as well.
Whitaker, the No. 14 seed in the draw, opened play in singles Friday with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 win over an opponent from Cerritos in the Round of 32. He followed that up with a three-set loss to the No. 7 seed from team state champion Irvine valley, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 in the Round of 16.
In doubles play, No. 11-seed Whitaker and Thayne prevailed in their first match of the day, 6-3, 6-3 over a pair from College of the Desert. In the Round of 16, they faced off against the No. 1 seed from Cerritos, narrowly falling to defeat, 7-6 (6), 7-5.
After a pair of wins Thursday, Lestelle dropped his Round of 32 singles match against the no. 12 seed from Cypress, 6-0, 6-3. In doubles play, Lestelle and Mitchell lost in the Round of 32 to the No. 10 seeded team from Cypress, 6-4, 6-4.
With Friday's losses in singles and doubles, the Pirates' 2017 men's tennis season comes to an end.
