Men's Tennis Opens WSC Play With Win Over SBCC

The Ventura College men's tennis team traveled to Santa Barbara for their Western State Conference opener earning a 6-3 victory. Corey Karen, Guenter Newman and Michael Burr were each victorious on the singles and doubles side of the match. VC claimed two of the three doubles matches and then won four of the six singles contests.

Karen teamed up with Hironori Koyanagi teamed up at No. 1 doubles for a 8-2 victory. Newman and Burr earned a 8-4 victory in the No. 2 doubles match. Koyanagi was defeated at No. 1 singles, but Karen and Newman earned victories at No. 2 and No. 3 singles, respectively. VC was able to pick up wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles by Burr and Victor Ribeiro to hold off the Vaqueros. Ventura claimed each of their four singles victories by straight set decisions.

The Pirates now 3-0 on the season and 1-0 in WSC play. They will travel to Glendale on Tuesday Feb. 23 for a 2:00 pm WSC match.
