Koyanagi, Karen Advance to WSC Singles Championship

The Ventura College men's tennis team played well for the second day in a row at the Western State Conference tennis championships at the VC Tennis Center Saturday.  Top-seed Hironori Koyanagi and No. 3 Corey Karen both posted a pair of wins in the quarterfinals and semifinals, respectively, to advance to face each other in next week's WSC men's singles final.  

Meanwhile Michael Burr won a marathon three-set match against teammate Leonardo Santos in the back draw to qualify for the state championships at the Ojai Tournament beginning April 22.

Koyanagi, Karen, Burr and teammates Victor Ribeiro, Guenter Newman and Ricardo Martin all qualified for state in singles.

In doubles, VC had mixed results with four teams in the quarterfinals.  No. 1 seed Koyanagi and Karen advanced to next Friday's semifinals, as did Newman and Burr, but the doubles teams of Martin and Florent Auteuil, and Santos and Ribeiro both lost in the quarterfinals.  All four VC doubles team have qualified for the Ojai.
 
The WSC championships conclude on Friday April 10 at the VC Tennis Center.  Meanwhile, the Pirates will also begin their run through the CCCAA SoCal Regional Playoffs on Tuesday April 7 against an opponent to be determined.
