Pirate Men Dominate Day 1 of WSC Championships

The Western State Conference Singles and Doubles Championships have become a showcase for the Ventura College men's tennis team.  On day one of the three-day event, the Pirates advanced all four doubles teams to the quarterfinals, while placing five of eight singles players into the quarterfinals.

No. 1 seed Hironori Koyanagi had the easiest path to the quarters, with a first round by and an easy 6-2, 6-1 win in the round of 16.  No. 3 Corey Karen lost four total games in winning two matches and No. 7 Guenter Newman also had a pair of victories.  Ricardo Martin won two matches, including an upset of the No. 8 seed while Victor Ribiero had two win as well, to advance to the round of eight.  All five VC quarterfinalists qualified for the CCCAA State Championships to be held later this month at the Ojai Tournament.

Loenardo Santos and Michael Burr each won their first match before falling in the round of 16.  They will play each other in the back draw on Saturday April 4 for a spot in the state championships.

In doubles, No. 1 seed Koyanagi and Karen received a bye into the quarterfinals, while No. 6 Santos and Ribiero won their match 6-0, 6-2 to advance.  Martin and Florent Auteuil upset the No. 3 seed to make the round of eight and Burr and Newman also advanced.  All of the VC doubles team have qualified for the Ojai.

Singles will play through the semifinals on Saturday April 4 and the doubles will play through the quarterfinals, all at the VC Tennis Center.  The WSC Championships will conclude Friday April 10, also at VC.
