The Pirate golf team opened their 2024 season with a solid showing at the Pt. Conception Invitational at La Purisma Golf Course in Lompoc Sunday and Monday. Sophomore AJ Ryland led the Pirates with a two day performance of 80/84, 164, which tied for 20th overall out of 86 individual competitors. Daniel Darwin turned in an 84/82, 166. The Pirates totaled a team score of 410/428, 838 to finish seventh of the 14 competing teams.
VC had a great start on Sunday on the Par-72 course outside of Lompoc, carding a 410, which was the second-lowest score of the day. The Pirates were consistent throughout the line-up with Ryland, Logan Gonzalez and Ian Chapital all turning in scores of 8-over 80 while Darwin (84) and Johnathan Burns (86) were within six shots of their teammates.
The second day was not quite up to speed as Ventura came back to the field with a team score of 428.
Individual scores for Ventura included Ryland' 164 and Darwin at 166 followed by Gonzalez (80/90, 170), Burns (86/85, 171), Chapital (80/92, 172), and Logan Cook (92/87, 179).
Canyons won the event with a 399/386, 785 followed by Mt. San Antonio (410/395, 805) and Fresno (413/398, 811).
The Pirates will open Western State Conference play on Monday Feb. 5 at Oakmont Country Club in Glendale.
