AJ Ryland shot a 2-over 73 at Oakmont Country Club in Glendale Monday to claim medalist honors, and the Pirates' men's golf team carded a team score of 403 to claim third place at the Western State Conference No. 1 event. VC came in 17 strokes behind first place Canyons and 12 behind Santa Barbara while finishing six strokes ahead of host Glendale. Ventura's Elijah Delsi turned in a 6-over 78 to tie for fifth place overall.
Ryland's score was the lowest of any medalist at Oakmont in the past six seasons. Only VC's Joey Herrera went lower, recording a 2-under 69 in 2018.
Jonas Slattum was the third Pirate on the score sheet with an 82 followed by Zack Garboski at 84. Nathan Long carded an 87 and Martin Alvarez turned in a 93.
Ventura will host the next WSC event on Monday Feb. 13. Tee times at Oxnard's River Ridge Golf Course will begin at 10:00 am.
