Pirates Finish Strong at CCCAA State Championships

The VC golf team posted season-best round in the afternoon with a 2-over 362, but it was not enough to overcome a sluggish morning round as the Pirates finished sixth at the CCCAA State Championships at Soboba Springs Golf Course in San Jacinto Monday. Ventura posted a 383-362, 745 in the final event of he season. Individually, Evan Colborn earned All-State honors with a 1-under par 74-69, 143 to finish in a tie for sixth place, earning his All-State nod in a card off. Steen Zeman shot a 73-70, 143 to also tie for sixth place overall.

It was a difficult morning for the Pirates as they cam in with a team score of 383 to fall to sixth place midway through the 36-hole event. Zeman was the low man with a 1-over 73 and Colborn posted a 2-over 74. Other morning scores for VC included Zack Garboski (78), Nicholas Burns and Nicolai Cascione (79), and Jonas Slattum (82).

Things got much better in the afternoon with Colborn leading the way. He fired a 3-under 69 and Zeman joined him in red numbers with a 2-under 70. Burns came back with an even-par 72 and Cascione was at 2-over, 74. Garboski turned in a 77 and Joshua Calderon shot an 81 to complete the Pirate scores. VC's round of 362 was a season-best.

College of the Canyons claimed the state title with an overall 358-362, 720 and Saddleback was two shots back at 363-359, 722. Reedley finished third followed by Cypress, Folsom Lake and Ventura.
