2020 VC Men's Golf Review

In a season that concluded with a "what if," the Ventura College men's golf team looked to make a deep run into the CCCAA State Championships in May.  When the 2020 season was suspended due to the coronavirus, the Pirates were alone in second place in the difficult Western State Conference, trailing only defending state champion College of the Canyons. The Pirates had three runner-up finishes and a pair of third-place finishes in five WSC events. In addition to the stellar play of sophomore Mason Teron, two freshmen, Evan Colborn and Steen Zeman each notched individual third-place finishes at separate events.

Teron, a Buena High School product, was named the team's Most Valuable Player for the second year in a row with a team low tournament scoring average of 76.38. He produced the team's low score in three of eight rounds, and was second twice. He averaged 2.5 shots over par in his last four outings of the year. In tournament play, he had five Top-10 finishes, including a pair of runner-up places and a third-place finish. Teron was well on his way to earning another All-WSC honor.

The Pirate freshmen also made their mark, including the squad's best score of the year, a 2-under 70 by Zeman in the Pirates' final outing of the year at Santa Maria Country Club. The third place finish by Zeman led VC's season-best team mark of 369.

Meanwhile, Colborn's best effort came on the worst day of the season for golf. He shot a well-earned 80 in nasty conditions to finish in third place at the WSC-Glendale event.

Sophomore Kaden Santos earned the team's Scholar Athlete Award for the second consecutive year.  The Rio Mesa High School product is a business major with a cumulative grade point average of 3.78, including two fall semesters of a perfect 4.0 GPA.  Santos played in 7 of 8 tournament rounds this season with a low round of 76 at Stockdale Country Club in Bakersfield.
