Ray and Burns Qualify for State Golf at SoCal Regionals

The Ventura College golfers Michael Ray and Nick Burns both qualified for the CCCAA State Championships in play at the Southern California Regionals on Monday at Los Serranos Country Club in Chino Hills. The Pirates shot a team score of 781 to place seventh of the nine teams to complete their team season.

The Pirates struggled in the morning round on the par-74 South Course, shooting a team score of 396. Mason Teron (75), Ray (76) and Burns (77) led the way for VC in the morning.

Ventura played better in the afternoon, carding a team score of 385, giving them a total of 781 for the 36 holes. Ray and Burns each shot a 1-over 73 on the par-72 North Course in the afternoon to punch their ticket to state.

On the day, Ray shot a 76-73--149 to advance while Burns' 77-73--150 left him in a tie for the final position for state with four other players. His par round on the back nine in the afternoon broke the deadlock and sent him to the championships.

Other Pirate scores on the day included Teron, 75-75--150, Noah Hollander, 83-82--165, Jake Yasutake, 85-83--168, and Kaden Santos, 87-82--169.

Canyons won the regional with a team score of 726 followed by Mt. San Antonio (732), Santa Barbara (739) and Cypress (740), Orange Coast (741), Palomar (744), and Ventura. The top four teams in the regional advance to the state championships, along with the top five players not on a team qualifying for state.

The CCCAA State Championships will be held on Monday May 13 at Silverado Country Club in Napa.
