Ventura College sophomore Denis Kakimoto carded a 3-over par 147 at the CCCAA State Golf Championships Monday at Sandpiper Golf Club in Goleta, claiming fifth place and earning All-State honors. He recorded rounds of even-par 72 and 3-over 75 in the 36-hole event at the picturesque ocean-side venue. Meanwhile, Joey Herrera tied for 23rd of the 60 participating golfers with a score of 153.

Kakimoto had an excellent round in the morning with his even-par score. He was just three shots off the lead and tied for fourth place following the first 18 holes.

In the afternoon, the ocean winds kicked up making play much more difficult. Kakimoto was able to overcome the conditions and post a 3-over 75 to finish six shots off the pace.

Herrera did not have his best outing, but was still better than a majority of the participants in the elite event. He birdied two of the final three holes in the morning for a 5-over 77, and rebounded in the wind with a 76 in the afternoon for a final score of 153.

Cypress won the team competition with a (362-374) 736, followed by Western State Conference champion Canyons at (381-373) 754 while Orange Coast (378-382) won a tiebreaker for third over Reedley (380-380) when both teams finished the day with a team score of 760.
