Ventura Races Past Glendale at AVC

The Pirates' men's basketball team raced past Glendale 92-62 Friday afternoon in the opening game of the Gregg Anderson Memorial Tournament at Antelope Valley College in Lancaster. Anthony McIntyre scored 20 points while Adrian McIntyre and Donavan Williams added 14 and 13 points, respectively to the Ventura total. VC had 12 players reach the scoring column in the runaway victory that took them to 7-0 on the season.

It was all Pirates early as Anthony Garza scored on the first possession of the game, followed by a putback by Kordell Gordon, a lay-up from Anthony Mc. off a steal by Garza and an assist by Shulton Tobin, and a pair of free throws by Tobin for an 8-0 lead. Jelani Bell hit from range at the 11:30 mark for a 21-11 advantage and Anthony Mc. scored a three with 6:08 on the clock to stretch the lead to 14, 31-17.  VC outscored the Vaqueros 14-7 beginning with that shot to hold a 42-24 edge at halftime.

It was more of the same for Ventura in the first five minutes of the second half as they outscored Glendale 17-2. Tobin and Bell hit back-to-back triples and Garza followed with a dunk at the 17:28 mark. Adrian Mc. made a lay-up, then connected a pair of charity tosses on two separate possessions before Anthony Mc. hit a trey for a 59-26 lead with 15:33 on the clock. Williams' three followed by a free throw on the next possession stretched the lead to 68-32, and Aaron Dawoodjee hit a three with 12:09 remaining for a 71-34 lead. Demario Morgan hit two free throws at the mid point of the half for Ventura's biggest lead, a 76-37, 39-point margin.

The Pirates maintained the margin down the stretch for a 92-62 win.

VC dominated the boards with a 40-17 edge, led by five caroms each from Garza, Tobin Anthony Mc. and Adrian Mc. Williams added five assists and three steals and Dawoodjee totaled nine points.

The Pirates move to the tournament semifinals Saturday Dec. 4 at 5:00 pm against Mira Costa College.
