On their longest road trip of the conference season, the Pirates' men's basketball team built a solid lead in the first half, then held off Cuesta's second-half charge, defeating the Cougars 63-60 in San Luis Obispo Wednesday night. Dayshone Henry had 27 points, 18 in the first half, and 13 rebounds in the game to lead VC (15-7, 6-0) and Timothy Turner totaled 16 points with 11 boards, six assists and three steals.

Behind Henry's 18-point half, the Pirates built a 43-26 halftime advantage. Turner netted 12 points in the period as Ventura shot 18-37 from the floor (49 percent).

VC went cold in the final 20 minutes, however, making just seven field goals in 23 tries (30 percent) as the Cougars charged. The Pirates were able to hold them off, however, to post the three-point triumph.

The Pirates also dominated on the boards, 54-28, including 20 offensive rebounds, mitigating some of their shooting woes.

Tone Patton had eight points and 10 rebounds for the Pirates while Shulton Tobin also netted eight points.

The Pirates begin the second round of Western State Conference North Division play on Saturday Feb. 1 at Santa Barbara. Tip-off at the Sports Pavilion is scheduled for 7:00 pm. Ventura returns home on Wednesday Feb. 5 with a 7:00 pm contest against Allan Hancock College.
