Alonzo Named 1st Team All State by CCCMBCA

Ventura College's Jacob Alonzo has been named first team All-State by the California Community College Men's Basketball Coaches Association. The 5-foot-8 sophomore from Camarillo High School was named the Western State Conference Most Valuable Player in a vote of conference coaches last month. He led the state in free throw shooting, hitting a phenomenal 94.9 percent of his attempts, 93-98, missing just five free throws all season. Additionally he was fourth in the state in steals, averaging 3.0 thefts per game.

In addition to his sharp-shooting at the foul line, which was a WSC record, Alonzo also had a great year shooting from the floor. He made 54.1 percent of his field goal attempts (164-303), while making 45.5 percent of his 3-point tries.

Alonzo led the team in assists, dishing out 4.9 dimes per game, and was third on the team in rebounding with 4.7 boards per contest. He was also a close second on the team in scoring, averaging 16.2 points per game.

Alonzo helped lead the Pirates to a 22-9 overall record in 2017-18 and a 9-1 mark in WSC North Division play. The Pirates won their third consecutive conference championship. In the post-season, VC advanced to the State "Sweet 16" before falling to defending state champion San Diego City.
