The VC men's basketball team captured the consolation championship at the Jonathan Wallace Memorial Tournament at Ohlone College in Fremont Saturday with an 80-75 victory over Modesto. John Williams led VC's balanced attack with 15 points and Isiah Reyes totaled 14. Taylor Sturgeon hit three 3-pointers en route to 13 points in the game for Ventura (4-2).
The VC Pirates led 40-34 at halftime and held off a late charge by the Modesto Pirates.
Darrell Handy-Johnson contributed eight points to the Ventura effort while Malcolm Ruff and Jacob Alonzo each netted seven points. Isaac Ramirez hit two treys for six points.
Ventura will play next at the Irvine Valley Classic on Thursday Nov. 16. They will tip off at 8:00 pm against Long Beach City College.
