Coach Ted Lawrence enters his 17th year at Ventura College and his 15th as the Defensive Line Coach and Recruiting Coordinator. He joined the Pirate staff in the spring of 1998 and served as the Offensive Line Coach for two years prior to assuming his duties on the defensive side of the football.
While serving as the Offensive Line Coach, Coach Lawrence tutored All-Western State Conference performers Chad Kahlsdorf (New Mexico State), Peter Naumes (Boise State), Mike Bueno (Iowa Wesleyan), Joe Callender (Jackson State), and Todd Therrien (Western New Mexico), who won two State Championships as the Head Coach at St. Bonaventure High School in Ventura, California.
As the Defensive Line Coach, Coach Lawrence mentored All-State performers Esteban Reveles (Boise State), a two-time team MVP at Ventura College, and Brian Easterly (New Mexico). He was also fortunate enough to coach All-Western State Conference performers Gerald Goldberg (Murray State), Steven Jackson (West Texas A&M), team MVP Victor Barrios (University of Charleston), Brian Gardner (Bowling Green), Kello Kirk (Tennessee State), Jonathan Bennet (Langston University), TJ Prell (Lindenwood University), Aaron Hernandez (Humboldt State), Courtney Robinson (Southern Oregon), Andrew Henggeler (UCLA), and Kiko Kauvaka.
Coach Lawrence also tutored All-SCFA National Northern Division performers Ricky Grant (Delta State), Josh Aguirre (CLU), Derrick Clune (Lindenwood University), and Tommy Stuart (New Mexico), who signed a Division 1 scholarship after his freshman season with the Pirates.
Since 2010, Coach Lawrence has tutored Wayne Blackwell (San Angelo State, TX), John Lattimore (East Carolina University), Tyler Williams (Saint Anslem University, NH), Taylor Ramsey (Southeast Missouri State University), Kalvin Cruz (New Mexico State University), Daniel Miller (Dixie State, UT), Benny Theysen (Henderson State, AR), Donovan Brownlee (Texas A&M Commerce), Colby Cabatu (Texas A&M Commerce), Herbert Monroe (Midwestern State, TX), and DeAndre Roberts (Kansas State University). In 2013, Coach Lawrence developed James Lopez (Sterling College) and Gary Wortham Jr. (University of Richmond), who signed a Division 1 scholarship after his Freshman year at Ventura College.
Coach Lawrence has 23 years of coaching experience. He began his coaching career at his alma mater, Santa Clara High School, in 1992, and then moved on to St. Bonaventure High School, where he coached from 1993-1995, leaving the program as the Defensive Coordinator and Defensive Line Coach. At St. Bonaventure, Coach Lawrence mentored All-CIF and All-State defensive lineman Sam Benner, who went on to start at defensive end for Stanford University. Coach Lawrence spent the 1996 and 1997 seasons at Oxnard High School, where he served as the Junior Varsity Head Coach and Varsity Defensive Line Coach. Coach Lawrence joined the coaching staff at Ventura College in 1998. Coach Lawrence's Oxnard High Varsity squads were a combined 16-3-2.
Coach Lawrence prepped at Santa Clara High School in Oxnard where he earned first-team All-CIF, All-Ventura County, and All-Frontier League honors while leading the Saints to back-to-back Frontier League Championships in 1988 and 1989. He played center and blocked for All-CIF quarterback and current Buena High School Head Coach Tim Gutierrez.
Coach Lawrence played center during the 1990 and 1991 seasons at the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York.
Coach Lawrence earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from UC Santa Barbara in 1994. He went on to earn his M.Ed. from Azusa Pacific in 1998. He then earned his second Master's Degree, an M.A., from Azusa Pacific, in 2002.
He currently teaches English and serves as the Head of the English Department at Oxnard High School.
Coach Lawrence and his wife, Rosario, reside in Oxnard and have two children.
