Mat De Los Santos

Mat De Los Santos

Mat De Los Santos enters his first season with the Pirates coaching the Inside Receivers. He is a Ventura native, who played at St. Bonaventure High School for three seasons as both quarterback and wide receiver for the Seraphs. Coach De Los Santos transferred to Rio Mesa high school in 2007 and was the Spartans starting quarterback as well as a defensive back his senior season.

In the fourth game of his senior year, Mat ruptured his spleen during the second quarter, playing the remainder of the contest before being rushed to the hospital.  He missed a number of games due to that injury, playing in the final two outings of the year.  He was recruited by many schools, including Ivy League universities, but lost potential scholarships due to the injury.

Mat continued to chase his dream of playing Division I football. In 2009 he walked on to the Fresno State team under the head coach Pat Hill. De Los Santos was a four-year letterman with the Bulldogs, earning a football scholarship. He began his Fresno State career at wide receiver and worked to inside receiver as an upper classman. Mat contributed on special teams, specializing in punt block and punt return and kickoff return. In his senior year under coach Tim DeRuyter, De Los Santos helped the Bulldogs capture the Mountain West Conference Championship. He earned his bachelor’s degree in criminology in 2012.

Mat began coaching at Ventura College in July 2013.  He looks to bring a new edge to an already great coaching staff with hard work, intensity, love for the game, and football knowledge.

De Los Santos has worked as a Child Care Counselor for two years; one in Fresno and currently in Oxnard.
