The Pirate football team earned a share of its second straight Northern Conference championship Saturday with a 37-28 win over Bakersfield. Leading the way were defensive end Mark Zavala and kicker Jake Lanski, who both earned Southern California Football Association Player of the Week honors for the Northern Conference.
Zavala anchored a strong defensive effort with an outstanding night. He had 12 tackles, including four stops for a loss and 3.5 sacks. This is the second time this season he has earned the SCFA Northern Conference Player of the Week award, as he also earned distinction following VC's Week 1 win over Fullerton.
Lanski, Meanwhile, set the Pirates' all time scoring record after kicking three field goals and four extra points, giving him 13 points in the game. He now has 171 career points, breaking the record of 168 set by VC Hall of Fame running back Travis Rogers in 1998-99. Lanski sealed the win over the Renegades with a 24-yard field goal with 2:54 remaining. It is his second SCFA honor, as well, winning the award for Week 5.
