Nine Pirates Honored as All-WSC

The VC baseball team had nine players honored on the All-Western State Conference team in voting by the conference coaches last month. Leading the way were four first-team selections including infielder Reiss Calvin, first baseman John Oleson and outfielders JR Godinez and Nick Schnopp. Ventura finished the 2022 season with an overall record of 22-18, 15-9 in WSC North Division play.

Calvin played in all 40 games for the Pirates in 2022, placing second in the WSC North with a .377 batting average. The Woodbury (MN) High School product was also led the conference in runs scored with 51 while finishing second in hits (66), third in on-base percentage (OBP, .466) and triples (5), fourth in runs batted in (39) and slugging percentage (SLG, .531), and fifth in stolen bases.  Defensively he posted a .950 fielding percentage at second base in 221 total chances.

Oleson, meanwhile, was third in the WSC North with a .362 batting average, also playing in all 40 games. From Portland OR's Beaverton High School, Oleson had a .467 OBP, second in the WSCN, and was fifth in the conference with 55 hits and 38 RBI.  He was second with 325 putouts at first base with a .994 fielding percentage.

Godinez was eighth in batting average at .337, third on the team, with 59 hits, third in the WSCN. He was second in the conference behind Calvin with 48 runs scored and he produced a .424 OBP, also in the WSCN's Top-10. The Rio Mesa High School product also led the Pirates with 22 walks, good for 11th in the conference. He had a .991 fielding percentage in center field with 111 put outs in 114 total chances.

Schnopp, a graduate of Camarillo High School, finished seventh in the WSCN and third on the team batting .344. He had a .492 SLG, good for sixth in the conference, and was seventh with three triples, 10th with a pair of home runs, 12th with 27 RBI, 13th at .414 for OBP, 18th with seven doubles, and 29 runs scored, and 20th with 44 hits while playing in 35 games.

Catcher Andrew Savage and pitcher Cooper Smith were named second team All-WSC.

Honorable Mention All-WSC honorees for the Pirates included outfielder Garrick Levesque, pitcher Sebastian Garcia and utility player Casey Turturici
