Baseball Drops Decision at LA Mission

The Pirate baseball team dropped a 10-4 decision Tuesday afternoon against Los Angeles Mission College in San Fernando. Ventura (3-2) was limited to five hits on the day, all singles, and Tommy Gibbons-Matsuyama scored twice to lead the way. Tyler Kennedy pitched four complete innings in the start and Blake Campbell had 1.1 innings of scoreless relief.

Ventura took an early lead i the top of the first without a hit. Gabe Baldovino walked and stole second, and Gibbons-Matsuyama was hit by a pitch. Both runners advanced 90 feet on a wild pitch before Omar Gastelum reached base on an error that scored both base runners.

After Mission scored three in the bottom of the first, VC tied the game in the next half-inning. Hunter Klingelhoffer had a one-out single, then stole second base. Travis Vaala brought home the runner when he reached base on an error by the first baseman. 

LAMC took control of the game with three runs in the fourth inning, followed by one run in the fifth and two runs in the sixth for a 9-3 lead.

The Pirates scored one more run in the eighth inning. Gibbons-Matsuyama singled, and went to third when Riley Hooper got on board via an error. Adrian Sandoval  hit into a fielder's choice that scored Gibbons-Matsuyama.

The Eagles scored one more run in the bottom of the eighth inning to set the final margin.

VC returns home to play Fullerton College on Thursday Feb. 6. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 pm at Pirate Park.
