Goffena Yields One Run Over Seven in 5-1 Pirate Victory

Taylor Goffena pitched a gem Thursday, giving up one run over seven innings, helping lead the Pirate baseball team to a 5-1 victory at Citrus College in Glendora. Tommy Gibbons-Matsuyama had an RBI single and batted another run in on a ground out while Steele Ledford had an RBI single and scored a run for Ventura (7-8). Dayton Provost had a pair of hits and scored a run.

Ventura got on the board in the top of the third inning with RBI singles from Ledford and Gibbons-Matsuyama. In the fifth, Gibbons-Matsuyama knocked in TJ Foreman on a ground ball for a 3-0 VC advantage.

The Owls scored once in the bottom of the fifth, but Ventura answered with single scores in the sixth and seventh innings for the final margin.

Goffena went seven complete innings, scattering eight hits while allowing just the one run. Joseph Cormier pitched a perfect eighth inning, and Sal Delgado threw a perfect ninth for the save.

VC returns to Pirate Park on Monday March 5 to complete the home and home series with the Owls before beginning Western State Conference play Tuesday march 6 at Oxnard. Both games are slated to begin at 2:00 pm.
