Pirates Fall in Extra Innings at Cerritos

The Pirate baseball team was unable to have an early 2-0 lead hold up as the fell at Cerritos 3-2 in 11 innings on Wednesday afternoon. Making up a rain out from the day before, VC (6-8) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, and had a solid pitching performances from Noah Proffitt and Jeff Thoben, but were unable to pick up the victory. Rudy Aguilar and Dayton Provost provided RBI hits for the Pirates.

In the top of the first inning, Following a lead-off walk to Steele Ledford, Chris McKee reached base on a fielder's choice force out at second. He then stole second, and scored on Aguilar's single. Aguilar then moved into scoring position on a passed ball before scoring on Provost's single. Sam Langler followed with another single to put runners on the corners before an inning ending double play.

Shane Gipson opened the second inning with a double, and Eric Thrower followed with a single, but VC had a foul out, strikeout and ground out to end the threat.

The game remained a 2-0 affair until the bottom of the sixth when the Falcons plated a pair of scores to tie the game.

Cerritos picked up the win with a run in the bottom of the 11th inning.

Proffitt had a solid outing on the mound, throwing six complete, scattering seven hits, and giving up two runs, one earned. Thoben was good through 4.2 innings before yielding the game-winning run.

The Pirates return to the field on Thursday March 1 at Citrus College in Glendora before hosting the Owls on Saturday March 3. First pitch on Saturday at Pirate Park is slated for 1:00 pm.
