The VC baseball team traveled to Pasadena Friday afternoon, coming home with a 2-1 victory over the Lancers. Colton Follett scattered five hits over 6.1 innings to pick up the win for Ventura. Tony Fonzo had three hits, including an double, and an RBI to lead the offense while Dylan Colman scored both runs for the Pirates.
The Pirates got on the board in the top of the first inning before the seats were even warm. With one out, Colman walked, then stole second. Fonzo and Codi Santana also followed with free bases to load the diamond for Michael Volaski. He reached base on a fielder's choice for an RBI as Colman scored to make it 1-0 for Ventura.
VC doubled the lead in the third inning with a two-out rally. Colman was hit by a pitch, and Fonzo followed with an RBI double for a 2-0 VC cushion.
That would be all Follett needed. He pitched into the seventh inning, limiting PCC to four hits while striking out seven. He gave up one unearned run in the sixth inning, and left the game with one out in the seventh.
Alex Van Es pitched one scoreless inning before Taylor Campos shut the door on the Lancers to pick up his first save of the season.
Ventura has a quick turnaround, with another contest on Saturday Feb. 21 at home against Citrus. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
