Baseball Drops Season Opener at San Diego Mesa

Ventura College Baseball opened its 2015 season on the road in San Diego and the Pirates bats were as cold as the rainy cloudy weather. Managing just six hits and one run they fell to the Olympians of San Diego Mesa by a final score of 8-1. Falling behind 5-0 after two innings, VC (0-1) managed to post a run in the third inning, but while the Olympians tacked on single runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings, the Pirate offense remained quiet.

Sophomore Bradley Fullerton mustered the Pirates' lone RBI when he drove in freshman Ryan Coker, who had doubled with two outs in the third. Sophomore Dylan Colman added a single stole a base and reached base on an error. Sophomore Michael Volaski and freshmen Carlos Sanchez and Brison Cronenbold collected the other Ventura hits.

Sophomore Colton Follett started on the mound but did not make it beyond the third frame with a high pitch count ending his day early. Follett allowed six runs, three earned, on seven hits with three Pirate errors adding to the workload.  He struck out three and walked one.

A bevy of Pirate relievers held the Olympians to two runs over the final five innings with sophomores Billy Davidson and Alex Van Es pitching scoreless innings. Freshman Taylor Campos made his college debut with s scoreless eighth.

The Pirates will stay down south to play a two-game series at Cypress College with a 2:00 pm game Friday Jan. 30 and a 12:00 pm game Saturday Jan. 31.  VC makes its 2015 home debut on Friday Feb. 6 at 2:00 pm against West Hills College.
