Watson's HR Not Enough for VC

Freshman Tyler Watson came to the plate in the bottom of the ninth with his team trailing by one run. He hit the ball out, tying the score at 10-10, completing a nine-inning chase for the Pirates against Allan Hancock College in their season finale. Unfortunately, that would be the final run of the season for VC (16-20, 9-11) as the Bulldogs scored a run in the 13th inning to take home the 11-10 extra-inning victory at the VC Baseball Complex. Watson had a triple and a home run, three RBI, and scored a pair of runs while Wesley Solomon had three hits, two RBI, and scored twice, as well.

Hancock got on the board quickly with four runs in the top of the first inning. Ventura starting pitcher Grayson Weber settled down after that until the fifth when the Bulldogs plated three more scores. The Pirates began their comeback in the bottom half of the frame with four runs to make the score 7-4 after five. VC scored one more time in the sixth before AHC plated three runs in the seventh, taking a 10-3 advantage. Ventura scored three times after the seventh inning stretch, and once again in the eighth to set up for Watson's heroics. Hancock scored a run in the fourth extra frame for the final 11-10 margin.

VC got on the board in the fifth inning on Solomon's bases-loaded single, advancing Harrison Crawford to second base and scoring Austin Mascorro and Eric Contreras. On the next batter, Crawford and Solomon executed a double steal, and an errant throw by the Hancock catcher allowed Crawford to come home to score. Following a walk, Jared Patterson stole second base, and an errant throw by the first-baseman allowed Solomon to come around to score.

Hayden Cronenbold walked to open the sixth inning, and eventually scored on Mascorro's ground ball out, making the score 10-5. VC scored three more runs in the seventh when Watson tripled home Solomon and Patterson, and then came home on Cronenbold's ground out, closing the gap to 10-8. Tyler Hawkins singled in the eighth inning, and a throwing error on the play allowed Mascorro to score, setting the stage for Watson in the ninth.

Moscorro had a pair of hits and an RBI while scoring two runs and Patterson also recorded two hits with a run scored. Crawford had a pair of safeties and scored one run.

The Pirates close the 2013 season with a record of 16-20 overall, and a Western State Cofnerence North Division mark of 9-11. They finish in fourth place in the conference.
