The VC beach volleyball team split a pair of matches Thursday in Huntington Beach, sweeping host Golden West after competing with Westcliff University, dropping a 4-1 decision. Bryce Swain and Kylie Ibbotson provided the Pirates with their lone point against Westcliff, a four-year school that is ranked No. 4 nationally in the NAIA, and one of five points against the host Rustlers.
In the Pirates' first match of the day, they fell to defeat for the first time this season against four-year Westcliff University, 4-1. Swain and Ibbotson provided Ventura with its only win of the match, a 9-21, 21-17, 15-12 triumph in the No. 5 slot. Olivia Sletten and Ashley Johnson also had a solid performance, dropping a three-set match at No. 2, 21-18, 17-21, 15-9.
In the second match, Ventura (4-1) remained unbeaten against community college competition with their 5-0 sweep over Golden West. Kayla Murdoch and Autumn Rojelio Moreno captured the No. 1 match 21-16, 21-9 while Sletten and Johnson won at No. 2, 21-8, 21-12. Swain and Ibbotson won heir second match of the day 21-8, 21-7 in the No. 4 slot and Averi Carter and Katey Mulville prevailed in their No. 3 contest, 21-14, 21-5.
The Pirates will return to action on Friday March 3 in Irvine against Orange Coast and Irvine Valley.
