Three Pairs Advance to Beach Volleyball Quarterfinals

Three pairs of Pirates advanced to the quarterfinal round of the Western State Conference Tournament Friday at Santa Barbara's East Beach. VC's team of Alexis Baloyo and Amelie Zubia will take on teammates Savannah Marchese and Averi Carter in one quarterfinal while Amaris Garcia and Katey Mulville will play in another Saturday morning April 30 beginning at 10:00 am at the Ventura Harbor Cove Courts.

Baloyo and Zubia, the bracket's No. 2 seed, had a first round by before defeating the No. 15-seed from Santa Barbara, 21-12, 21-16.

No. 7-seeded Marchese and Mulville defeated a duo from Santa Barbara 21-11, 21-13 in the round of 32 before advancing to the quarterfinals with a 21-12, 23-21 win over the No. 10-seeded team from Santa Monica.

Garcia and Mulville were ranked No. 12 in the draw and defeated the No. 21 pair from Bakersfield, 21-8, 21-8. They then posted a 21-14, 21-15 upset victory over the No. 5-seed from Glendale to move into Saturday's quarterfinals.

No. 22 Grace Williams and Madelyn Grajeda upset the No. 11 pair from Glendale 21-8, 21-9 in the round of th 32 before dropping a three-set heartbreaker to the No. 6 seed from Santa Barbara, 17-21, 21-11, 15-7.

No. 19 Monica Montoya and Lexi Donnelly dropped a three-set decision to the No. 14 team from Moorpark, 17-21, 21-7, 15-8 in their opener while No. 25 Jocelyn Montoya and Ana Medrano dropped a 21-9, 21-15 decision to the No. 8-seed from Moorpark.

 
Quarterfinal play begins at 10:00 am on Saturday April 30 at the Ventura Harbor Cove Courts hosted by Bakersfield. Seven of the eight pairs playing Saturday will qualify for the Southern California Regional Championships on Friday May 6 at El Camino College in Torrance.
