The VC men's and women's track and field teams hosted the first full-team event of the 2024 season last Friday, the Western State Conference Relays. On of the meet's standouts was Pirate sophomore Erick Tienda. The Rio Mesa High School graduate produced gold medal finishes in both the 5k run and the 3000m steeplechase events. Tienda broke the tape in 15:58.98 in the 5k and recorded a mark of 9:53.10 in the steeplechase. He also teamed up with Andrew Stuart, Joseph Moore and Angel Cano to win silver in the (1, 1, 2, 4) sprint medley relay. For his outstanding season debut, Tienda has been named this week's VC Pirate Student Athlete of the Week sponsored by M & M Sports.
