Zane Carter & Michael Soho, Football & Men's WP - Week of Oct. 23.

As October winds down, the fall sports are in their stretch run. While many are moving toward successful conclusions to their respective seasons, two sports and two individual performances stood out in the past week.

The VC men's water polo team is on the rebound after a difficult 2022 campaign. They turned up the effort in October, finishing the month with a 7-4 record, including a stellar 4-0 performance this past weekend at the Día de los Muertos Tournament in Chula Vista. Freshman utility player Michael Soho was a steady presence all weekend with 11 goals, five assists and three steals over the four-game set. The Rio Mesa High School alumnus had a pair of scores with two assists in the win over Palomar and another three goals with two steals against Grossmont, both teams the Pirates had dropped decisions against earlier in the year.

Meanwhile, the Pirate football team is on the verge of another Northern Conference title. Leading the way on defense is Buena High School graduate Zane Carter from his defensive back position. The freshman had 11 tackles, five solo, in Ventura's 38-20 win over Bakersfield Saturday. On the year he had recorded a team high 49 stops in eight games with one interception and a pair of pass break-ups.

As we move to November, we honor Michael and Zane as this week's VC Pirate Student Athletes of the Week sponsored by M & M Sports.
