Ventura College student athletes excelled once again in the classroom in the spring semester, achieving an overall 3.22 grade point average. A total of 106 Pirates earned Dean's List honors by posting at least a 3.5 GPA in 12 or more units of study, with 49 of them recording a perfect 4.0 GPA of all A's. Of VC's 19 intercollegiate athletic teams, 17 earned an overall GPA of 3.0 or better.
Women's Tennis posted an incredible 3.81 team GPA as coach Nelson Emery's squad had six of eight players on the Dean's List. Women's Cross Country athletes had a combined 3.51 team GPA with four Dean's List honorees while Steve Hoffman's Women's Soccer program was at 3.48 with 13 on the Dean's List. Coach Cole Mahoney-Bruer's baseball team had the most student athletes on the Dean's List with 23 followed by Women's Soccer, then Coach Steve Mooshagian's football squad with 12.
Overall, Ventura College's 306 student athletes took an average of 13.2 units each, even in a year in which the minimum academic load had been lowered due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Additionally, fall sports did not compete, reducing minimum standards even more. Despite this, Pirate student athletes continued to achieve success in the classroom at a high level. Students had reduced practice opportunities throughout the year and almost all classes were taken completely online. Additionally, Pirate athletes had to undergo weekly Covid tests in the spring, testing more often during competition.
Ventura College Athletics has long been a champion of academic achievement among its student athletes. Many Pirate programs have earned state and national honors for their work in the classroom, and VC has had 39 California Community College Athletic Association State Scholar Teams since the award was created in 1996, a state record. VC has had at least one team honored academically by the CCCAA each year for the past 20 years. (This program has been suspended by the CCCAA for the 2020-21 school year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.)
